Scholarship Opportunities
Dorrin and Ruth Ross Scholarship
Application: Closed for 2022
Washington County college-bound youth who are currently 4-H members or FFA members or were a member their Sr. year in high school (within last 5 years), have the opportunity to apply for the Dorrin and Ruth Ross Scholarship. The scholarship was originally established in 1991 to enable 4-H and FFA members to pursue higher education through full or part-time attendance at any public or nonprofit independent college or university in the United States. Scholarships are awarded to defray the cost of tuition and books. Scholarships are weighted on need as the first criteria followed by program participation and academic achievement.
The Rosses were natives of Licking County in Ohio. Mrs. Ross was a broker and owner of Gateway Realty in Columbus, Ohio, and in more recent years worked for the Ohio Rehabilitation Department. Mr. Ross spent most of his career with the Ohio Parole Board. The Rosses resided in Columbus from 1935 until their deaths in 1988 and 1989 respectively. Glenna Gibson, niece of the Rosses and Trustee of the scholarship, brought the scholarship to Washington County a year after she and her husband, Jim moved to Springfield in 1995.
In the past five years, the foundation has presented 718 scholarships to 4-H, FFA and students in designated schools in Ohio and Washington County, Kentucky. Those scholarships totaled $343,046.00 and of that amount, $105,930.50 went to Washington County 4-H and FFA members.
Eligible students may pick up applications from the Washington County Extension Office or WCHS Ag. Department. The application is also located on the Washington County 4-H website. Deadline to apply for the scholarship will be March 15, 2022. Late applications will not be accepted. Applications can be emailed to Mrs. Gibson at glnnamarie89@gmail.com. Applicants must follow guidelines for certain sections to be handwritten and include handwritten signatures. If you have further questions, you may contact Glenna Gibson at 859-375-0210.
